A. Hygiene

Trust me, I know the struggle that is trying to pack all of your hygiene essentials for international travel. I have encountered various issues in the past, for example having too many liquids or just having too many items in general and nowhere to put them in my suitcase. Moreover, what if your hostel does not provide towels? Is there even space to pack a towel? To put it simply – yes! Keep reading below to learn about some unique hygiene products to include on your international travel essentials checklist.

1) Hanging Toiletry Bag

Link to product: BAGSMART Toiletry Travel Bag with Hanging Hook.

A hanging toiletry bag is one of the best international travel essentials. It keeps all your essentials organized and easily accessible, no matter where you go. With its multiple compartments and transparent pockets, you can effortlessly locate your toothbrush, skincare products, medications, and other essentials without rummaging through a jumble of items.

Its durable material ensures everything stays secure and leak-free, and you can easily fit toiletries for two people in a single hanging bag. Moreover, the hook allows you to effortlessly hang it in bathrooms or over doorknobs, making it a lifesaver in cramped spaces. Last but not least, it also folds down for easy storage in suitcases and backpacks. You thus do not have to worry about it taking up valuable storage space.

Priced reasonably between $20 to $40 USD, a hanging toiletry bag is worth every penny. Not only is it functional, but it also comes in several stylish colors.

2) Portable Wash Bag – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: Original Scrubba Portable Wash Bag or Mini Scrubba Portable Wash Bag.

The Scrubba Wash Bag is one of the best international travel essentials you can pack. When laundry situations are few and far between – or completely unavailable – you can wash your clothes with the handy Scrubba Wash Bag!

This lightweight portable washing machine allows you to travel with less (which is great for those who travel only with a carry-on). It also cleans your clothing items better than washing them in a sink would. As long as you have access to water, you can wash your clothes very easily. The only caveat is that you need somewhere to hang your articles of clothing for a day or two until they dry.

Whether you are a budget-conscious traveler, staying in a remote area, camping abroad, or just generally want to pack lighter, the Scrubba Wash Bag is well worth the investment! You can pick from two sizes. First, there is the original Scrubba Wash Bag, which only weighs five ounces (141 grams) and barely takes up any room in your luggage for $55 USD. Second, there is the mini Scrubba Wash Bag, which is half the size and $41 USD.

As a bonus, the Scrubba Wash Bag also doubles as a dry-bag. This is great for any water sports, a trip to the beach, or traveling home with wet clothes. The Scrubba serves more than one purpose, allows you to travel with less, and lets you to do laundry virtually anywhere – making it one of the best international travel essentials.

3) Electric Toothbrush with UV Cleaning

Link to product: Aquasonic Toothbrush with UV Sanitizing Base and Charging Travel Case.

Everyone who uses an electric toothbrush knows that brushing with a manual one is just not the same. That is why I take my electric toothbrush with me everywhere I go. I used to travel with an electric Oral-B toothbrush, but it was not ideal for packing. The charger was bulky, and the brush did not have a case. It would thus just roll around in my toiletry bag.

These issues were fixed when I upgraded to the eco-friendly SURI toothbrush. The brush has a slim aluminum handle, and the charger is tiny. The best part about the SURI toothbrush is its travel case, which not only protects the toothbrush and keeps it clean but also has an integrated UV cleaning light. The UV light disinfects the brush head and kills 99.9% of harmful bacteria.

The SURI toothbrush is also repairable because of its modular design, and the heads are recyclable. It is the perfect option if you are looking for an electric toothbrush that is not only eco-friendly and hygienic, but is also great for traveling.

4) Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

Link to product: Viori Shampoo and Conditioner Bar with Bamboo Holder.

When traveling internationally, it is essential to become an efficient packer and, ideally, slim your suitcase or backpack down as much as possible. One of the ways I do this is by going through my beauty bag and getting rid of as many liquid products as possible. One of the easiest things to swap out are shampoo and conditioner bottles for bars.

The compact bars not only offer space-saving efficiency, but they are also eco-friendly as you are cutting down on plastic waste. On top of that, shampoo and conditioner bars last longer because they have a much more concentrated formula compared to their liquid counterparts. I have had bars last for over four months! One tip: make sure you choose bars that are correct for your hair type. For instance, if you choose a deep conditioning bar but your hair is not dry, you might end up with really oily hair or vice versa.

Traveling with shampoo bars not only streamlines your packing but also aligns your journey with a greener and more convenient approach to your beauty regime.

5) Hairbrush with Hidden Compartment

Link to product: Diversion Safe Hair Brush by Stash-It.

I remember going to Skiathos in the Greek Isles with my parents as a teenager, and whenever we left anything out it was stolen by the maid. This was anything from my own spending money to chocolate to jewelry. Now as a grown-up taking my kids on holiday, those kinds of experiences have made me more vigilant of how I look after personal items on holiday as well as more prone to booking somewhere with a safe.

However, last year I came across a travel hairbrush with a secret compartment. You can unscrew the secret compartment and then use it for hidden storage. While the compartment is not too large, it is big enough to fit some rolled-up spending money, your favorite bracelet, a USB, single room key, or even a piece of paper with your itinerary.

We use this kind of brush both in our hotel rooms as well as on days out during a holiday. It is perfect for a beach day, a pool day, or a day at the waterpark. However, we tend to use it the most on beach days. For example, we might bring our own picnic and thus only need money for an ice cream or a doughnut. It is much easier to store some cash in the hairbrush than having to worry about bringing our entire wallet with us.

I highly recommend adding a hairbrush with a hidden compartment to your list of international travel essentials. You can utilize it on days out, holidays, excursions, and even picnics in the park. Who is going to steal your hairbrush?

6) Microfiber Towel – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: OlimpiaFit Quick Dry Towel – Three Size Pack.

When it comes to packing your international travel essentials, a microfiber towel is a must. This versatile and compact towel is a game-changer for travelers who want to get dry and pack light.

The first thing you will notice about these towels is their incredible absorbency. Despite their thin and lightweight design, microfiber towels can absorb seven times their weight in water. Moreover, what sets microfiber towels apart from regular towels is their quick-drying ability. Due to the nature of the fibers, these towels can dry up to 10 times faster than normal towels. They are a lifesaver when you are constantly on the move and do not have time to wait for your towels to dry.

Ideal for backpackers or anyone trying to save space, microfiber towels are also incredibly compact and lightweight. You can fold them up into a fairly small square so that they take up minimal space in your luggage. While prices can vary depending on the brand and quality, they are generally more budget-friendly compared to luxury cotton towels. They are thus a cost-effective investment for frequent travelers.

I never leave home without my microfiber towel. From the beaches of Bali to touring the thermal springs of Pamukkale in Turkey, this towel is almost always in my day pack. Its quick-drying ability and compact size make it one of the best international travel essentials for anyone seeking practicality on their adventures.

7) Bug Bite Thing

Link to product: Bug Bite Thing Suction Tool.

If you love going hiking or camping but hate mosquito bites, then you are not alone. I was so happy when I found this low-tech gadget that stops bug bites from itching a few years ago. And the name describes it perfectly– “Bug Bite Thing”.

It is essentially a plastic syringe (without a needle) that you place over a bite to suction the “venom” out. There is a small end as well as a large end that you can easily flip around to use, depending on the size of the bite. I still do not know if it is legit science or just a placebo effect. Nevertheless, it actually works as I have experienced that it lessens the horrible itching and swelling from bites.

The sooner after a bite you use it, the better it works. Therefore, I keep one in my purse or hiking pack to make sure I always have one with me. For example, I took it on my recent trip to the Colombian Amazon. Since then I have never gone on a trip without it!

B. Apparel – International Travel Essentials

Unfortunately I cannot tell you exactly what apparel items to pack for your international trip. For example, you need to pack summer clothes and a bunch of bathing suits if you are headed to the beach. On the other hand, you need to pack winter clothes and accessories to stay warm if you are headed to Iceland to explore an ice cave. Nevertheless, there are a few items in the apparel category that can be considered international travel essentials no matter the destination. Interested in learning what these items are? Well, then keep reading below!

8) Comfortable Walking Shoes

Link to product: Veja Women’s Esplar Logo Sneakers.

When we travel, we tend to walk for more time and across longer distances than usual. A strenuous walk can take a toll on your body if you are not prepared with the proper footwear. There is nothing more annoying than blistered, aching feet on your vacation! That is why a reliable pair of white sneakers must be on your international travel essentials packing list.

Wait before throwing your gym shoes in your suitcase. If you have to pack one pair of comfortable and trendy walking shoes for Paris (or any capital city of fashion like New York or Milan), would those shoes cut it? Wandering on foot in these metropolitan cities is unavoidable. You probably want to kick your sneakers game up a notch. Unfortunately, comfort and style do not always go together when it comes to shoes.

Nevertheless, opt for a pair of these all-white leather sneakers. They are comfortable, stylish, and versatile. Moreover, just one reliable pair can work with most of your outfits. That also means you are freeing up your luggage space. Another piece of advice you should keep close to your heart: never, ever bring a new pair of shoes on your trip. No matter how comfortable you think the new shoes are, you do not want to take the chance of them wearing down your feet. If you need a new pair for upcoming travel, then buy them in advance and break them in before your trip.

Whether your next destination is Paris or some other city around the world, you can stride in confidence in your best white sneakers on every trip.

9) Compression Socks – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: Run Forever Calf Compression Sleeves and TechWare Pro Ankle Brace Compression Sleeve.

Compression socks are seriously underrated as one of the best international travel essentials. Compression socks – though admittedly dorky – are one of the best-kept travel secrets.

Have you ever packed a perfectly broken-in pair of shoes for a trip only to end up with a huge blister on your first day of exploring the city? We all have. While most of us shrug it off, it is preventable. Even young bodies experience some swelling after a flight. That tiny bit of edema then causes feet to hurt a little sooner, shoes to fit a little tighter, and the start to a trip to be a bit rougher.

Pro travelers know that packing compression socks for flights over four hours does more than just reduce the risk of major health issues like blood clots. Compression socks also actually help us arrive at our destination with a little more pep, a little more bounce in our step, and a body that is ready for adventure!

To achieve peak in-flight compression comfort, I have perfected a combination. The combination includes Run Forever Calf Compression Sleeves paired with TechWare Pro Ankle Compression Socks. This combo helps ensure even compression from knee to toe-tips. Moreover, this is something that knee-high compression socks rarely manage well and is especially lacking in plus-size compression socks. My perfect combination helps keep me comfortable and safe, even on extremely long flights.

10) Money Belt

Link to product: Money Belt – Travel Fanny Pack.

I got my money belt on my first trip abroad at a little store in Paris. Almost 20 years and 39 countries later, it is still one of my most beloved international travel essentials.

A money belt is kind of like a fanny pack. However, it is super thin so that you can discreetly wear it under your clothes. Its thin nature allows you to hide your passport, credit cards, and cash safely on your body as well as out of the reach of pickpockets. When you are traveling abroad, it is easy to have your attention pulled in multiple directions. You thus become a bigger target for petty theft. Money belts are an added line of defense, and they help lessen the mental load of keeping track of all your stuff.

Additionally, they are super affordable. You can find them between $10 to $20 USD (which is much cheaper than trying to replace your stolen passport abroad). Moreover, I especially love my money belt for times when I am in transit. From long overnight bus trips across Myanmar to crowded metros in Mexico City, it helps me rest a little easier not having to be as vigilant about my belongings.

11) Travel Pants

Link to product: Western Rise Travel Pants (discount code = SEANLEI for 15% off).

You might think – why do I need a pair of travel pants? Can I just wear leggings or jeans instead? Well, technically you can. However, travel pants offer increased comfortability and convenience. Let me go into some details if you still need a bit of convincing.

The Western Rise travel pants are comfortable as well as stretchy. You can thus wear them while relaxing on a long flight or while hiking to waterfalls in Iceland. Moreover, the fabric is stain proof and water repellent. No worries if it starts to rain outside or you accidentally spill a drink on yourself. On top of all this, it is lightweight, easily packable, and can be worn for multiple days.

Another one of the best things about the Western Rise travel pants is that there are a few different varieties from which you can choose. For example, the Evolution Pant has a slim-straight style while the Spectrum Jogger has a tighter fit around the ankle. I enjoy the Evolution Pant 2.0 the most, and it greatly reduces the number of pants I need to pack. It is designed for rigorous days hiking as well as (un)productive days in the office.

C. Technology

Technology is one of the most fun (and expensive) categories when it comes to creating your international travel essentials checklist. Due to the fact that technology is always advancing, there are always new products being introduced to the market. For example, have you ever heard of a portable travel safe to keep your electronics safe and sound while on the move?

12) Electric Adapters and Converters

Link to product: Two-Pack TESSAN G Power Adapter and Converter.

If you are traveling abroad, then one of the most important things to bring with you is an electrical adapter and/or electrical converter. Our reliance on portable technology is only increasing. It is thus essential to be able to recharge your personal electronics, from mobile phones to earbuds to Kindles.

You might want to do some research on your destinations to see whether you just need an adapter or whether the country’s electricity runs on a different voltage. If it runs on a different voltage, then you also need a converter. I recently worked abroad in Ireland for four months, and I traveled from the US. When preparing for my trip, I learned that Ireland (and the UK) uses the ‘type G’ plug. I thus purchased these fantastic electrical adapters.

Honestly, I love these adapters. They can handle one grounded plug as well as three ‘regular’ plugs. Moreover, they have three USB ports. You can thus pack just one adapter and be all set for your trip. They are the perfect accessory, no matter whether you are spending one day in Dublin or a month in London. Just remember – you need a different kind of adapter if you are traveling to continental Europe.

13) Cable Organizer Bag

Link to product: FYY Travel Cable Organizer Pouch.

A padded cable organizer bag is a great addition to any list of international travel essentials. Keeping all of your cables organized and together when traveling can be a real pain. This is especially true when you need to store a separate cable for your phone, tablet, and power bank.

The reason this cable organizer bag should be at the top of your packing list of travel essentials is because it is well-sized as well as soft on the outside. It is thus easy to fit into an overpacked suitcase! It is also waterproof and has multiple pockets of various sizes so you can fit all of your electronic needs.

You do not need to limit yourself to packing only cables in this bag. It has enough space to store your travel adapters, travel luggage scale, and even some small electronics or power banks. You can expect to pay anywhere between $10 and $20 USD for a cable organizer bag. The price depends on the size, number of compartments, and additional features. A quick search will give you a variety of colors, styles, and sizes to meet your travel needs.

14) Airalo eSim – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: Airalo eSim or Airalo eSim Mobile App.

If you are traveling internationally and want to avoid ridiculously high data roaming costs on your cell phone bill, then an Airalo eSIM is a must.

An eSIM is essentially a digital version of the physical SIM card you probably have in your phone. More traditional options are to buy an expensive international plan through your phone service provider or to buy a physical SIM card once you arrive at your destination. On the other hand, you can purchase and install an eSIM that you can activate as soon as your plane lands.

There are several different eSIM providers, but Airalo is one of the best. Download the easy-to-use Airalo app to make sure your device is compatible as well as to find the best eSIM for your trip. You can then choose from a country-specific eSIM, regional eSIMs, and a global eSIM. Most Airalo eSIMs include data only, which allows you to make calls and send texts over apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. They also have a global Discover+ eSIM which includes data, calls, and texts.

Airalo eSIMs are pretty cheap, with country-specific ones starting around $5 USD. You can even top up your eSIM if you need more data. Overall, Airalo is a great, affordable way to stay connected on the go. You can easily search for restaurants, get directions, and make social media posts without hunting for WiFi!

15) Wireless Earbuds

Link to product: Beats Fit Pro Wireless Noise Canceling Earbuds.

My Beats Fit Pro have been an absolute game-changer when it comes to traveling. I honestly cannot imagine traveling without earbuds. Whether I am on a long bus ride or waiting for a delayed flight, I can easily kill time with Netflix, podcasts, audiobooks, and music. The noise-canceling option keeps me sane when I am surrounded by chatty neighbors or crying babies. Moreover, they are perfect for adding a beat to my runs and solo hikes.

Nevertheless, they are not just a travel essential for me, but also for those around me. Whether I am video chatting with friends or watching Netflix in a shared space, these earbuds are my polite way to enjoy my stuff without bothering anyone. In all honesty, I think everyone should travel with some sort of headphones for this particular reason.

Although headphones and wired earbuds work for this job, I would highly recommend buying a pair of wireless earbuds. They save space as well as weight compared to headphones. Additionally, they are a lot more comfortable to wear when trying to fall asleep to music on a plane, bus, or even in a hostel (they are my secret weapon against snorers). They are thus my ultimate travel companion for any type of trip!

16) AirTag – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: Apple AirTag.

I do not know about you, but after spending days packing the perfect outfits, there is nothing more devastating than arriving at your destination without your luggage. This happens to all travelers at some point and is super frustrating. It happened to me on a trip to Tanzania for a safari. I was stuck wearing the same leggings for three days until my luggage was found.

Nowadays, it seems that lost luggage is becoming an even worse problem. Sometimes bags are not even able to be found. To solve this problem, I always throw an Apple AirTag in my checked luggage. The AirTag works by using the locations of nearby iPhones to circumvent its location. So as long as there are iPhones nearby (and there always are), then you are able to see its location on an app on your phone.

The AirTag helps you maintain peace of mind as you can check that your bag is on the plane before you take off and when you land. It is also helpful if your luggage is unfortunately lost by helping you to notify airport staff of your bag’s location. A lot of times the bag is just at the airport and did not make it to the baggage carousel. For under $50 USD, I believe that purchasing an AirTag is well worth the hassle saved if you were to lose your luggage.

17) Osmo Pocket Camera

Link to product: DJI Pocket Camera 2.

Osmo Pocket 2 is a teeny-tiny yet powerful photo and video camera that can literally fit inside your pocket. An almost invisible camera that weighs less than four ounces (120 grams) is a game changer for those of you who love traveling light. Osmo Pocket 2 is a must-have item that you will find handy on any sort of trip, but especially if you need to keep weight down, for example when going on a hike. Moreover, it allows you to capture moments discreetly, especially in places where bigger cameras may cause unnecessary attention.

Osmo Pocket 2 is a lifesaver for photography and videography enthusiasts who are looking for a high-quality camera alternative to bulky DSLRs or even smaller mirrorless cameras. Although it does not replace the bigger professional cameras, the 64-megapixel image and up to 4k video output give you high enough resolution to produce beautiful imagery. Moreover, a handheld 3-axis motorized gimbal stabilizer ensures that you can take smooth and professional-looking footage. Add timelapse and hyperlapse features, and you then have a fantastic tool to capture your vacation creatively.

18) Camera Bag

Link to product: NOMATIC McKinnon Travel Camera Bag.

The Nomatic Peter McKinnon Camera Backpack is seriously one of the best things we have ever purchased for travel. We were a little apprehensive to purchase this backpack due to the fact it is fairly expensive. It costs around $399 USD for the bigger 35L version (which we need because we have a lot of lenses). Nevertheless, it was worth every cent. It is honestly one of the best travel backpacks around. Moreover, it comes in a range of sizes, so you can purchase a smaller backpack if that better suits your needs.

If you are planning to travel with a large camera and tripod for your trip, then this backpack is a travel essential for sure! We travel with a Nikon D750 camera, a DJI Mavic Pro drone, about four different lenses, a tripod, and two laptops. They all fit perfectly in the backpack, and the tripod neatly slides into a compartment on the side.

We found that other less expensive backpacks would break too easily. On the other hand, this backpack is still in perfect condition after six months of constant travel. It comes with moveable internal separators so you can easily organize your items inside the backpack – a feature of the bag I love. Moreover, we find that the padding inside the bag as well as the separators mean we do not need to travel with large cases for our camera and lenses, which saves us a lot of weight. Another big benefit of the backpack is that it opens up like a suitcase. You thus do not have to go digging into your backpack for whatever you need.

19) Selfie Stick – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: Extendable Selfie Stick Tripod with Wireless Remote.

The selfie stick is a handy, foldable selfie stick that also acts as a tripod for your phone and has a Bluetooth remote to click pictures. This can definitely come in handy, especially when you are on a solo or couples’ trip. It is all too easy to become tired of taking solo pictures of each other or waiting for someone to take a picture of both of you. We always carry this with us during our trips and have captured some great photoshoot-worthy pictures. This is an essential international travel accessory because it lets you pose without worrying about ending up in places where you cannot find someone to take a picture of you. Another reason we love it so much is that we both get shy and make awkward faces whenever we ask a stranger to take pictures.

The stick itself is lightweight and compact enough that you can easily slip it into your day bag. The setup does not take much time either. All you have to do is fit your phone in the adjustable holder, detach the Bluetooth clicker from its slot, and connect it to your phone. Then set the tripod at the desired height and start clicking away. We have used this on mountains, the cobblestone streets of Europe, and even rough terrain. Since it is pretty lightweight, it is advisable not to use it in windy locations. I would also avoid using it in tripod mode in busier cities for safety concerns.

You can buy a selfie stick with a tripod for as cheap as $10 to $15 USD. We bought ours three years ago at around $10, and it works perfectly well with Android and iOS devices.

20) Power Bank

Link to product: Omni 20+ 20000 mah Laptop Power Bank Portable Charger.

The most important tool for any traveler is a cell phone. The best way to ensure cell phones have plenty of charge is to travel with the high-capacity power bank by Omnicharge. Not only does this power bank allow you to fully charge your phone, but it supports almost any device ranging from drones to DSLR cameras.

This power bank has been an indispensable tool for our adventures as a traveling couple. It allows us not to worry about having enough juice to navigate long travel days on multiple trains across Europe. For example, one area where we commonly use this device is on layovers when the only other option for charging is airport USB charging terminals. It has thus protected us from using these public charging options, for they are notoriously hacked by “juice jackers” that use malware to steal your information. We simply pull out the power bank and use its handy wireless charging option while we wait for our next flight.

One of the biggest shortcomings of most power banks on the market is that they do not provide a high enough wattage output to charge powerful devices. Luckily, Omnicharge 20+ is up to the task. It even offers the option of plugging in your laptop power cable directly into its built-in AC plug. This travel essential is the perfect way to guarantee that you land at your destination with plenty of power on your phone to let your loved ones know you arrived safely.

21) Portable Travel Safe

Link to product: PacSafe Travel Safe 12 Liter.

No matter where you travel, you always have some form of valuables with you, whether that is your passport, wallet, camera, and/or laptop. A large majority of international travelers have insurance in case something happens. However, the sheer inconvenience of a theft is huge. A portable travel safe is a superb deterrent to theft and also offers peace of mind when traveling internationally.

Designs for portable travel safes vary from durable hard plastic cases (which are great for the beach) to steel mesh framed bags that can be secured to immovable objects with a cable and padlock. The steel mesh framed bags are great for providing you with a little extra security. Additionally, they do not weigh much, and you can always find something to which you can attach them.

We have attached our portable travel safe to trees when diving and snorkeling, to bed frames in hostels, and to metal loops in the trunks of cars when we leave for day hikes.

D. Packing – International Travel Essentials

Honestly, this is one of my favorite categories of international travel essentials. I love being organized, so it just makes sense that I also love items that help me stay organized when packing as well as when I am out and about in a new country. For example, packing cubes have absolutely changed the game for me. No longer are my clothes just hopelessly thrown into my suitcase, but instead they are neatly packed into cubes by category (bottoms vs. tops, etc.).

22) Packing Cubes

Link to product: Eagle Creek Packing Cubes Set.

Packing cubes are the ultimate travel tool, for they keep your clothes organized and clean. You can even pack more clothes in your suitcase since the clothes take up less room when packed in a cube. Moreover, packing cubes offer the ultimate organization solution as they lessen the time needed to pack, which in turn lessens your stress when packing for a trip. Packing cubes should be on every person’s packing list of international travel essentials.

One of the best things about packing cubes is that you can easily separate each person’s items if you are sharing a bag with your kids or partner. The cubes can also allow solo travelers to separate items, for you can use them to group outfits together or to separate pants vs. shirts.

For example, when I am packing for Tulum or a beach destination, I like to have a cube for swimsuits, a cube for undergarments and pajamas, and then a cube for outfits. No matter whether you fold or roll the items in the packing cubes, you will definitely save some space in your luggage. Moreover, you may even be able to travel with just a carry-on.

One of the best things about packing cubes is that there are a variety of size options, color choices, etc. You can thus definitely find a set that meets your needs as well as your budget.Whether you are an expert or a newbie traveler, your trip will be a breeze if you use travel packing cubes.

23) Reusable Water Bottle

Link to product: Arslo Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle.

A reusable water bottle is not only an essential in everyday life, but it is also an essential for international travel. Embracing a water bottle is not just about convenience and aesthetics, but it is also a conscious choice that allows you to play a role in preserving our planet while saving money for your next trip. Single-use plastic bottles are non-biodegradable and contribute greatly to global pollution. As responsible travelers, it is crucial to keep our environmental impact in check.

More than that, your trusty reusable bottle will also save you tons of money in the long run. Quenching your thirst is a priority while you are out discovering the world. Buying multiple bottles of water a day can really add up in total cost over time. The good news is that many places offer free water dispensers, and tap water is perfectly safe to drink in some countries. One of the things to do in Taipei is to try out their endless drink options. Many shops will even give you discounts if you bring your own reusable bottle to fill your drink.

24) Sling Bag – International Travel Essentials

Link to product: Peak Design 3 L Everyday Sling Bag or North Face Berkeley Field Bag.

A sling bag is a versatile bag designed to be worn over one shoulder with a strap that goes diagonally across the body, positioning the bag on the lower back or hip. Unlike traditional backpacks, which have two straps and rest on both shoulders, sling bags have a single strap, making it easy to swing them to the front.

Due to their compact design, sling bags are perfect for international travel. The ability to swing the bag to the front provides instant access to essentials such as passports, tickets, and money. Moreover, many sling bags have multiple compartments. These compartments help travelers organize smaller items such as chargers, headphones, and so on. Besides, travelers can position the bag in front when in areas known for pickpocketing, thus making it harder for thieves to access.

On my first trip to Japan, it was extremely convenient to carry a sling bag around. My passport, train tickets, and coin purse were always within grasp. I could thus navigate through Japan’s crowded attractions, busy airports, and railway stations smoothly. It also allows me to draw out my camera quickly to capture fleeting moments. I highly recommend sling bags from The North Face and Peak Design (the latter is particularly useful for those traveling with a camera).

25) Neck Pillow

Tired of carrying around those chunky neck pillows? When not in use, they often just get in the way and are too bulky. Not only that, but they take up a lot of precious real estate on those already tiny plane seats!

The trtl Travel Pillow is a great alternative for those who want to save space but still get the benefits of a good night’s sleep on a plane. Wrapped in super-soft fleece is a flexible yet durable neck support system. To use it, simply wrap it around your neck and secure it with velcro for an easy fit on the go.

With a $60 USD price tag, it is not cheap. Nevertheless, we quickly ended up buying a second one for my husband because we were tired of taking turns using it. Overall, the trtl Travel Pillow is perfect for those who are serious about saving space as well as traveling light. When not in use, it takes up little of your precious carry-on room by easily tucking away between clothes, shoes, or toiletries.

26) Dry Bag

If you are looking for one of the best international travel essentials, then consider purchasing a waterproof dry bag. Waterproof dry bags are one of the top accessories you need to protect your valuables during outdoor travel. Dry bags keep your phone, keys, money, and personal items safe from moisture and debris. You can bring along a dry bag when you fish, camp, hike, mountain bike, snowboard, or visit the beach.

Thankfully, I recently used a dry bag on our trip to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. I slipped out of a canoe and dropped our expensive camera equipment in the water. Fortunately, it was all in a waterproof bag, and everything was dry inside! The key to dry bags functionality is their thick, woven, nylon-blend fabric. This fabric makes dry bags durable and waterproof. In addition, these bags can tolerate harsh conditions better than a standard day pack.

When packing, dry bags make a great addition to your luggage. Save yourself from messes and pack toiletries that might leak during a flight inside your dry bag. You can also use a dry bag to store damp or dirty clothes during your travels. Fortunately, dry bags are affordable travel essentials. Expect to pay $15 to $60 USD depending on the size you need. Dry bags are available from five to thirty liters and come in a variety of colors.

Waterproof dry bags keep your phone, money, and personal items safe. Trust me, it is worth the investment to buy one of these international travel essentials.

27) Passport Wallet

There is no better way to keep track of your passport, credit cards, and insurance cards than with a passport travel wallet. Gone are the days of having to dig through your backpack or suitcase to find the card you need. Instead, include a passport wallet on your list of international travel essentials and rest at ease.

The wallet has a specific slot to fit a passport. Additionally, it has multiple other slots to fit credit cards, drivers license, insurance cards, vaccination cards, etc. Moreover, there are even two SIM card slots and two transparent slots. The wallet can truly hold just about everything you need.

I have personally utilized a passport wallet on many adventures. From road tripping around Iceland to hiking Machu Picchu Mountain in Peru, this wallet has kept me organized as well as prepared.

E. Other – International Travel Essentials

This is the final category for the list of international travel essentials. Moreover, there is only one item in this category. A travel board game did not fit neatly within any of the other categories mentioned above. It is thus special enough to receive its own!

28) Travel Board Game

My husband and I love our extensive set of travel board games. Every time we plan a trip, we pick a couple and stuff them into our bag. Aside from being avid board gamers, we find that they work well when traveling because they arouse curiosity and tend to be a great way to make friends.

Board games help keep you entertained on long journeys as well as flights. They are also a great option for when the weather is not suitable for being outdoors. The essential idea is to pick games that are small so that they are portable. Additionally, pack ones that do not have too many pieces so that you do not need a large surface to play on.

Now that we travel with our children, we have found that games also work well when it comes to keeping the kids occupied. Other parents will probably concur that they love this part about board games too!

Needless to say, we keep swapping the games around and never travel with the same ones all the time. Most are small enough that we have taken them with us while backpacking through Asia and Europe. A travel board game is something that I highly recommend packing, especially if you are traveling for an extended duration of time.

I absolutely agree with you about the plane snacks! I always carry more than I need while travelling because travelling makes me hungry all the time and food is so expensive in airports and on planes.

Yes, absolutely. I love packing snacks to help me save money and to keep me satisfied and ready to go when the plane lands.

I generally make a big pile of things to pack, and then I go through it a second time (and a third if needed) to slim down!
